I have a '98 Honda Civic EX sedan. The car is Auto. My car needs an engine replacement. I'm searching for the JDM version of the D16y8 but can't seem to find one available. I was wondering if they do have it, would everything bolt on without complications? I live in California and want everything to be legit and smog legal. Let me know your thoughts.|||If you are considering a swap, look into the B16A2 from a 99-00 Civic Si. With all the stock emissions equipment it should pass California's requirements no problem. Also it was on basically the same chassis as your car so the swap shouldn't be too much harder than it would be to just put on another D series.|||I agree with the first answer. The second mentioned B16 but there is a big problem with that. The B16 is an awesome engine and was designed for the Civic platform, but you will need to swap the engine, transmission, ECU and axles. Another concern is that the B16 is manual only. If you want to make the switch, then you'll be stuck looking for interior pieces for the manual conversion. Also, a JDM engine will be able $1,000 for the EX - before labor. Would it be cheaper than having yours rebuilt? I live in CA too. Not sure if you checked with these guys but Soshin Trade is a good place to look. Their number is (800) 543-2476. Good luck.|||No, everything wil NOT be bolt on without complications, an engine is not a complete system, it needs IT electronic management, not "any" electronic management.
You have the D16Y8 with 127 HPs, the most powerful smog legal would be the D16Z9 with 130 HPs, thats a 3 (useless) increase given the needed money for the swap.
You can use a car performance simulator to virtually do the swap and see what things change your performance and what not, or how 3 HPs helps you, try at http://www.nxgtrsim.com|||there is the d15b jdm replacement engine but since u live in CA
best to get a usdm d16y8 at a junk or your local craigslist|||look in the recycler or google used japanes engines..
