Can you import JDM cars that were available in US?

Since my dreams of driving a JDM RHD S15 have been crushed, ( D''': ) can i still import a JDM s14 or EVO? Both of these cars are availablie here, so is it basically just getting the car registered then your free to drive?|||No, its not that simple. Japan and the United States do not share the same vehicle safety standards or emission requirements, which means a JDM S14 for the Japan market will not be the exact same as a JDM S14 for the American market. A Registered Importer will still be required to modify the vehicle to conform to the FMVSS %26amp; State Emission Laws and the RI will still need to get permission from the NHTSA before they can perform the work. The fact that both are available in both countries does nothing but increase the likelihood the NHTSA will say "yes" (since they likely have the required data for the car which the RI can refer to when peforming modification). Its not gonna make the process any cheaper.

Besides, if its already available here, then why can't you just buy one that is here? I am willing to bet that converting to RHD is a hell of a lot cheaper than going through the import process.
